West of the Moon
written by Jason Vaughn & Angie Riemersma
Murder, revenge and intrigue surround the city of Los Angeles like a haze in the latter days of February, 1942.
Its days before The Battle of Los Angeles, one of the most mysterious events in the citys history, and tension is high as the country finds itself in the throes of World War II. Martin Mars Davis is a down-on-his-luck purveyor of lost people who leads a hapless life after the disappearance of his beloved wife, Laura. But his aimless existence is thrown into chaos when a beautiful blonde bombshell by the name of Samantha Sam Rose walks through his door and pleads with him to find her missing sister, a torch singer named Darla.
Darla Rose was a headliner at the local BeBop Lounge, the place to be seen in L.A. in 1942. The BeBop is owned by notorious kosher nostra gangster Noah Ackerman. When Mars starts nosing around the club to find out what he can about Darlas disappearance, he immediately finds himself at odds with Ackermans celebrity wanna be son Elijah.
After consulting with the local newsstand owner, informant, and general busy body, Joey Carlos, Mars learns that Darlas disappearance may not only be linked to Ackerman, but also to several soldiers from the local Army base who happen to frequent the BeBop Lounge.
Mars returns to the BeBop to break into Ackermans office in search of clues. There, Mars discovers puzzling, classified military documents in Ackermans safe.
Mars suddenly finds himself wanted not only by Ackerman, but by the Army, the police, and a bookie looking to collect on a long overdue debt. Yet he pursues his investigation and every new clue he discovers leads back to Darla and the strange plans he found in Ackermans safe.
The deeper Mars gets, the more he learns that nothing he finds and no one he meets are what they seem to be. Set against a backdrop of swinging big band jazz numbers, exciting car chases, and gun fights, the twists and turns build at a frantic pace and end in an explosive and unexpected climax that could only happen in the City of Angels, somewhere West of the Moon
