Kindred
written by Angie Riemersma & Jason Vaughn
In the mid-1870s the small, sleepy town of Cimarron, Colorado is devastated by a string of grisly murders. With no obvious suspects, the town is quick to blame the local Ute Indian tribe. When beloved local rancher Sean Kelly is murdered, his hot-headed daughter, Kate is quick to blame the Ute as well.
A distraught Kate turns to her childhood friend, and Cimarron town sheriff, Liam Donnelly for comfort and support. Following her fathers funeral, Liam goes with Kate to the local saloon to watch her drown her sorrows with a bottle of whiskey. Liam is doing his best to defend the Ute while still sympathizing with Kates loss when the local roughnecks (the Lowery brothers) start wreaking havoc at the bar. The tension escalates when the Lowerys begin taunting Kate and an all out bar brawl ensues. Joseph Lowery pulls a gun on Kate, but she outdraws him, and in an act of self-defense, she is forced to shoot him dead, but unfortunately for her he is a U.S. Marshall. Kate flees the saloon with the remaining Lowery brothers in pursuit.
In Washington D.C Liams long estranged brother, and U.S. Marshall, Ethan Donnelly is given orders to return to Cimarron to hunt down Kate and bring her to justice for Joseph Lowerys murder.
While Ethan makes his way across the country, Liam pays a visit to Kates cousin, Austin Kelly in the hopes that he can provide some clue as to Kates whereabouts. Austin tells Liam he has no idea where Kate is.
Continuing his quest for answers, Liam visits the local Ute Indians, whom he is on good terms with, and where his secret love Pa is a member of the tribe. Liam has a discussion with the Ute chief, who insists to Liam that his people have nothing to do with the murders that have taken place in Cimarron, and Liam believes him.
Back in Cimarron, bounty hunter John Gage shows up to turn in a bounty, making his presence known to local law enforcement (Liams inept deputies).
Ethan arrives in Cimarron and sees Liam riding out of town. Following a hunch that his brother knows where Kate is, he follows him at a distance. They come upon Kate hiding out at a place they all knew as children. Ethan places Kate under arrest and the trio begins to make their way back to Cimarron.
On their way back to town, Liam, Ethan, and Kate come across a stagecoach robbery. It appears to be Ute Indians attacking, but once they catch up to the robbers it is revealed that in fact it is the remaining Lowery brothers disguised as Indians and it is that moment that Kate realizes who is responsible for her fathers death. The Lowerys escape, but Liam, Ethan, and Kate follow them.
The trail leads them to a train station in a neighboring town where they see the Lowerys boarding the train in an attempt to escape. A harrowing gunfight ensues, threatening the lives of not only Liam, Ethan, and Kate, but the lives of dozen of passengers on board the train as well. After an explosive encounter, only one of the three remaining Lowerys (Jake) survives, with Liam, Ethan, and Kate hot on his heels.
When Liam, Ethan, and Kate return to Cimarron they discover that warrants have been issued for their arrest (much to John Gages delight) and that the entire town has been turned against them. To clear their names and to bring to justice the killer of her father, Kate, Liam, and Ethan devise a plan that leads to a shootout like no other. Once the dust settles, lives are lost, family ties are tested, and the town of Cimarron is changed forever as the survivors question what is the true meaning of family and what does kindred really mean.
